My department is being eliminated middle of next year, I was just told by a friend that she was getting laid off, and your deal - it seems to be the thing to do for companies these days. But as you mentioned, it really helps you to grab your financial life by the horns - although no one would ask for it, it is an opportunity for us to learn a lot!
